துதிசூடு சொன்மாலை சாற்ற - விதிசூழும்
பாழ்வாழ்வின் பற்றகலு மிந்நாளி லுண்முகத்து
வாழ்வாய வீழு மயக்கு
மதி சூடு மாதவன் - நிலவைத் தன் சடையிற் புனைந்த பெருந்தவத்தோனான சிவ பெருமான்
மாண்பு உணர்ந்து - பெருமைகளை உணர்ந்து
செய்ய துதிசூடு சொன்மாலை சாற்ற - சொல்லினால் புனைந்த மாலைகள் ஆகிய செம்மயான துதியை அவன்பால் சாற்ற
விதி சூழும் பாழ்வாழ்வின் - விதியினால் சூழப் படும் இப்பாழ் ஆகிய வாழ்வின்
பற்று அகலும் இ நாளில் - பற்று விலகும் இந்நாளான சிவ ராத்திரியில்
உள் முகத்து வாழ்வு ஆய - மனதை உள்ளே செலுத்தித் தியானித்து வாழ்வை ஆய
மயக்கு வீழும் - மயக்கம் என்பது அறவே நீங்கிவிடும்

thudhi soodu sonmaalai chaatra - vidhi soozhum
paazhvaazhvin patragalum innaaLil uNmugaththu
vaazhvaaya veezhum mayakku
If, one turns inward and meditates upon the meaning of life on the day (mahashivaratri) in which the grip of attachment to the abyss like life leaves us when we understand the greatness and sing musically the praises of the great renunciant (Lord Shiva) who wears the moon as an ornament, then all bewilderment gets destroyed!
